About this blog

Budget in Perspective is a blog about the upcoming negotiations on the next EU Multiannual Financial Framework. The blog is sponsored by the German Federal Foreign Office.

Every seven years the negotiations about the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework trigger an intense discussion on how much money should be spent on EU level, who should pay for it and how the resources should be spent. The idea behind this blog is to establish an EU-wide discussion forum accompanying the negotiations by bringing together experts from the academic as well as the political sphere. In this respect the blog tends to raise the transparency of policy making at the EU level in general and particularly on the EU budget negotiations.

Why is this Blog published in English?

We want to lead an active and interactive European debate which brings together experts from all member states. To achieve this goal, we should ideally publish this blog in all 23 official languages of the European Union. Unfortunately, a translation of all articles and comments into all these languages is impossible for practical reasons. That’s why we decided on one language which is spoken by the greatest number of people Europe. English is the lingua france of the academic debate and is spoken by 38% of EU citizens as a native or foreign language.

A blog in German would have excluded many European experts from the discussion and focused the debate too much on Germany’s role in Europe and in the EU budget, without considering the community perspective as well as the positions of other Member States.

We hope that we can have a lively debate in English and still reach a large European audience from many member states.
